BONTOC, Mountain Province – Mt. Pukis here has become a famous site for local folks ever since it was “discovered” when this capital town was placed under community quarantine.
It offers a magnificent view of the sunrise and sea of clouds covering the whole four central barangays.
Social media posts of this stunning site created a craze and prompted groups and families to visit the area.
Mayor Franklin C. Odsey recently visited this trending mountain with its sea of clouds.
Together with personnel from the Municipal Tourism and Information Office, Odsey inspected the potential tourism site to assess it and explore possibilities of improvement in the area.
Jogging and trekking enthusiasts frequenting the area have been disappointed with how some sightseers have left waste at the site and other tourism sites nearby.
Following this, the Sangguniang Kabataan of central barangays have been conducting clean-up drives and information and online education campaigns urging visitors to manage their waste and maintain cleanliness in places they visit.  Odsey also urged the public to be conscious of the environment and dispose garbage properly.
He said with the recent approval of the 10-year solid waste management plan of Bontoc, there is the need to sustain efforts initiated by the local government on waste management, urging community’s involvement for success of the plan.
On March 9, 2020, the mayor issued executive order 10 which temporarily suspended tourism activities in Bontoc due to Covid-19.
But on Oct. 28, 2020, the municipal inter-agency task force, with consent of barangay officials, allowed inter-barangay tourism activities in the municipality with strict adherence to health protocols.
In an interview, Odsey expressed high hopes that with the continuous roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines in the country, Bontoc may soon open its door again to tourists for stakeholders to recover.
But while the municipality has yet to accept tourists, the Bontoc local government  is taking advantage of the time to help tourism stakeholders and improve tourism sites.
He said the local government will fund developments in Alab Oriente to improve and protect the Alab Petroglyph and Ganga Caves, which are considered national cultural treasures.
