ITOGON, Benguet – Searchers found the bodies of a live-in couple buried in a landslide here Tuesday under a huge volume of debris.
The couple was panning for gold along Antamok River.
Maj. Elpidio Pagoy of the Itogon Municipal Police Office, in a report, said the body of Nestor Talangcag, 45, was recovered at the landslide site in Antamok, Loacan Thursday afternoon (August 19).
The rescue team also found the body of Morina Simeon Lintal, who was earlier identified as Maureen Talangcag, 57 near the place where Talangcag’s body was found around 8 a.m. Friday.
The soil erosion from the mountain beside the Antamok River happened around 10:45 a.m. on August 17 that buried the couple panning in the river with two other relatives.
Dante Tomi, brother of Nestor, who was at the site, said the couple hid beside a boulder when the erosion started while their 17-year-old son ran for safety and immediately sought help from authorities.
A boulder buried the couple.
The body of Talangcag was brought to their residence for a wake.
Staff Sergeant Bryan Dintan said the couple were residents of Beda, Loacan.
Personnel from the municipal police, 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Co., Itogon Bureau of Fire Protection, barangay officials, and civilian volunteers helped in search operations, a regional police report said, adding the incident was reported to authorities around 11:55 a.m. that day.
Col. Reynaldo Pasiwen, Benguet police chief supervised operations.
Benguet experienced weeks of continuous heavy rains for more than three weeks that could have saturated the soil, authorities said.
The Office of Civil Defense reminded residents of possible landslides due to saturated soil. – With a report from Liza Agoot and Dionisio Dennis, Jr./ PNA
