SEVEN out of 10 Filipinos surveyed by PhilCare's 2021 Wellness Index study admitted they had more sexual activities during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
PhilCare President and Chief Executive Officer Jaeger Tanco said the findings have proven that during the lengthy lockdowns, "couples can enjoy more opportunities to improve their relationship in terms of physical and emotional intimacy."
The study, involving 1,042 respondents across the country, said that 69.5 percent, or 724, admitted to having more sex during the pandemic than before, adding they were satisfied with their sexual partner.
Most of the respondents who are married and cohabitating said they were enjoying more sex. More males admitted that they enjoyed sexual activities during the pandemic at 85 percent, compared to nearly 72 percent among females.
More younger Filipinos, or those aged 30 below, also enjoyed more sex during lockdowns, followed by those ages 31 to 40.
PhilCare, citing a medically reviewed article from the Insider website, said that having good sex has mental and physical health benefits such as reduction of stress, mood boost, calorie burns, sleep improvement and pain relief.
The World Health Organization said that good sexual health is fundamental to an individual's well-being and to socioeconomic development of countries and communities.
Tanco advised workplaces to promote sexual health to minimize sex-related risks and create an inclusive culture, as well as provide counseling support where employees can share sexual health concerns with trust and openness.
"The quality of conversations surrounding sex and sexual health in the workplace can shape a person's general view of what sex is and its effects on their physical and mental health," he said.
Tanco added that employers have the power to remove the stigma of discussing sex and help prevent societal problems such as sexual assault and harassment, unplanned pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
