Murder charge set against 80-year-old

PARACELIS, Mountain Province – The 80-year-old suspect in the killing of former provincial board member Carino Saggid Tamang, 56 here evening of March 6 is now in jail after he was arrested by police.
Based on report submitted to Cordillera police director Brig. Gen. Ronald O. Lee, the suspect was identified as Efren Tariago, of Barangay Bacarri.
Tamang, a resident of Poblacion here, was running for the same post this May elections when he was killed.
According to Paracelis police, the victim and the suspect were involved in a heated argument around 6:45 p.m. about a long-standing land dispute when the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the victim on the head and different parts of the body.
The victim was immediately brought to Paracelis District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Police looked for the suspect and arrested him. Found on the suspect was a Cal. 9mm gun loaded with three bullets.
Three fired slugs for .9mm and one a fired deformed slug were recovered from the crime scene.
In 2018, Tariago lodged a civil case against Tamang over the land being tilled by the latter.
The suspect is now under the custody of Paracelis while murder charges, violation of Commission on Elections gun ban and Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act are being prepared against him.
Tamang served three terms as board member of Mountain Province for the first district from 2007 to 2010, 2010 to 2013 and 2016 to 2019.
He was running for provincial board member anew under the Nacionalista Party.
Tamang was also elected as barangay (village) captain of Poblacion, Paracelis from 1997 to 2002.
Tamang’s wife is working at the Paracelis Dept. of Social Works and Development office.
She is the niece of Betty Fangasan, Baguio City Social Welfare office chief.
