BAGUIO CITY -- Mayor Benjamin Magalong said fare donations for public utility vehicle drivers are highly encouraged to give them a little boost in continuing to be of service to the public amid the fuel crisis and traffic problems being experienced in the city.
"Donations are welcome like letting the jeepney or taxi driver keep your change or giving an extra amount on top of the regular fare, just to show our gratitude, appreciation and concern for them and inspire and motivate them to do their job well inspite of the challenges," the mayor said.
He said any voluntary amount no matter how small will go a long way for the struggling drivers in face of the increasing oil prices and unchanged fare rates.
The mayor however emphasized that donations must be voluntary and not mandatory warning that some people may abuse the privilege.
"Let's make sure that nobody will take advantage of it and force people to give or impose a specific amount. We do not allow that," the mayor said.
He urged the public and the barangay officials to monitor and report any abusive behavior at once.
