Ilocos Region police heads file resignation

MALASIQUI, Pangasinan –
Ilocos region police director Brig. Gen. John Chua and the four police
provincial directors of the region have submitted their courtesy resignation in
adherence to the call of Department of the Interior and Local Government
Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. last week.
In a
statement issued on Monday, Jan. 9, Chua said the Ilocos Police Regional
Office “wholeheartedly” supports Abalos
in his efforts to cleanse the Philippine National Police (PNP) organization of
illegal drug-related activities.
He said this as an opportunity to strengthen and empower the PNP with discipline, integrity, and professionalism as a key agency in charge of putting the country’s campaign against illegal drugs into action and keeping the highest standards of professionalism and community service.
“As the leader of PRO-1, I am committed to adhering to the values and principles of our organization. To that end, I am leading PRO 1 in voluntarily submitting ourselves to undergo the necessary assessment and evaluation process that the designated committee will conduct. I have great faith in our leaders’ wisdom and by taking part in this process, I am certain that it will lead toward the betterment of the PNP organization and our country,” Chua said.
The four police provincial directors who also filed their courtesy resignation were Col. Marlo Castillo of Ilocos Sur, Col. Julius Suriben of Ilocos Norte, Col. Lambert Suerte of La Union, and Col. Jeff Fanged of Pangasinan, along with deputy regional director for administration Brig. Gen. Carlito Gaces and other full-pledged colonels in the region.
“If this is the way to cleanse the ranks of the PNP from misfits and scalawags, we will abide and we will comply. We will abide by the call because our record is clean,” Fanged said in an interview last week.
Fanged also directed chiefs of police in the 44 towns and four cities of Pangasinan to ramp up the fight against illegal drugs.
“In the province, Gov. Ramon Guico III has clearly instructed to eradicate illegal drugs,” he said, adding there are two police personnel being investigated for alleged involvement in illegal drugs.
“I will not name names but there are two non-officers who are currently being investigated and being validated. It is really a long process, we need to establish their involvement considering this entails dismissal. But if we were able to gather sufficient and solid evidence, I will not blink an eye and file cases against them,” he said.
Meanwhile, the PRO-1 conducted a “surprise” drug test on third-level officers and police lieutenant colonels in the region on Monday which yielded negative results.
This was conducted after some 17 third-level officers have signed their courtesy resignation.
“This is a way to manifest our full support to the Secretary of (the) Interior and Local Government and PNP. Also, in this matter, we could prove to the people that we have a clean and clear conscience and that we are deeply rooted in the fight against illegal drugs,” Chua said. – PNA
