Kevin Belingon gets blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu

>> Sunday, April 30, 2023

SPORTS

Carlo Quinto

Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon appears to be working on his ground game extensively during his offseason as he received a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
The 35-year-old spitfire from Kiangan, Ifugao was promoted by Prof. Gibran Langbayan, who possesses a stellar credential as a submission grappler and a black belt under Prof. Leonardo Fernandes.
Langbayan, who earned the distinction as the first black belt in the Cordillera region, awarded the new rank to Belingon at the Maharlika Martial Arts Center in Baguio City on Monday, April 10.
“It was an unforgettable surprise,” Belingon said of his promotion.
The former ONE Bantamweight World Champion began his training in jiu-jitsu in 2007, the same year that he turned pro in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). However, his main focus was on his prizefighting career.
Belingon has faced a long list of elite submission artists inside the Circle, including Masakazu Imanari, Masakatsu Ueda, Toni Tauru, Reece McLaren and Bibiano Fernandes.
Even though he has defeated opponents with exceptional grappling backgrounds, Belingon is aware that he still needs to improve in this area.
Last December, he decided to join the classes conducted by Langbayan to advance his skills on the mats.
Little did “The Silencer” know that he was ripe to transition from white to blue in four months’ time.
“This achievement is meaningful to me. All the hard work, the late nights, and the sacrifices are worth it,” he stated.
“I still have a long way to go, but I am a patient man. I’m willing to put in the work to get there.”
Participating in jiu-jitsu tournaments could be on Belingon’s agenda in the future.
“I am considering it, but we'll see," he quipped.
Belingon was last seen in action this past November, bowing to South Korean hard-hitter Kim Jae Woong by way of first-round technical knockout.
He plans to kickstart his road to redemption later this year.
“The priority, of course, is my MMA career. I am here to prove that I’m not yet done and I still have a lot to offer,” Belingon declared.
In relation to jiu-jitsu, the ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Championship will be on the line in ONE Championship’s maiden venture on United States soil on May 5th.
Mikey “Darth Rigatoni” Musumeci will defend his gold-plated belt against 2022 IBJJF No-Gi World Champion Osamah Almarwai in one of the featured attractions at ONE Fight Night 10: Johnson vs. Moraes III, emanating from the 1stBank Center in Denver, Colorado.
Filipino fight fans will get to enjoy the action on May 6 at 8:00 AM at watch.onefc.com, as well as at One Sports and One Sports+ on Philippine television.

Jhanlo Sangiao, Denice Zamboanga to represent Phl at ONE Fight Night 9

Two homegrown mixed martial arts talents will try to hoist the Philippine aloft inside the legendary Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on April 22.
Jhanlo “The Machine” Sangiao and Denice “The Menace” Zamboanga will be fighting side-by-side on the much-awaited ONE Fight Night 9: Nong-O vs. Haggerty card.
Sangiao is set to collide with Argentina’s Matias “El Rasta” Farinelli in a three-round bantamweight encounter, while Zamboanga is penciled to take on Brazil’s Julie Mezabarba in a women’s atomweight joust.
The eldest son of Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao holds an immaculate professional record of 5-0 with four victories by submission and one via knockout.
Moreover, “The Machine” is 2-0 under the ONE Championship banner. In his most recent outing last December, he forced ONE Warrior Series Philippines alum Anacleto “L.A.” Lauron to tap with a wrenching rear-naked choke in the first round.
His scintillating performance also earned him a $50,000 bonus.
The man standing in the way of Sangiao is Farinelli, an Argentinian standout from the world-recognized Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand.
Like Sangiao, Farinelli also owns a spotless 5-0 record, but all of his career wins have come by way of submission.
Both men were originally slated to face each other at ONE 164, but the latter withdrew from the bout after testing positive for Covid-19. As a result, Lauron filled in for him to square off with Sangiao.
On the other hand, Zamboanga (9-2) rebounded from back-to-back losses with a razor-thin split decision win over China’s Lin Heqin at ONE Fight Night 5 this past December.
Now, “The Menace” hopes to get back into the World Title conversation by defeating Mezabarba (9-4-1) at ONE Fight Night 9 in April.
However, it will not be a walk in the park for Zamboanga as Mezabarba has been proven to be no slouch of an opponent.
The Brazilian vixen first gained attention by scoring an upset against former World Title challenger Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi.
Although she lost her next two assignments opposite the likes of Stamp Fairtex and Jenelyn “The Graceful” Olsim, Mezabarba went the distance with them and made sure that they would have to earn the victory the hard way.
ONE Fight Night 9: Nong-O vs. Haggerty will be available at watch.onefc.com, as well as at One Sports and One Sports+ on Philippine television.

Kingad 100% ready for Saputra’s wrestling

>> Saturday, March 4, 2023

 SPORTS

Carlo Quinto

Complacency is a non-existent word in the vocabulary of Danny “The King” Kingad as he gears up for a pivotal flyweight bout that could dictate the trajectory of his professional career this 2023.
The 27-year-old native of Sadanga, Mountain Province is penciled to lock horns with Indonesia’s Eko Roni Saputra on the main card of ONE Fight Night 7: Lineker vs. Andrade II, emanating from the fabled Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on, Saturday, February 25.
For his return to action following a 14-month hiatus, Kingad ensured that he had all the help needed to cover all bases, including the intricate aspect of grappling in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA).
After all, he is facing one of the most decorated grapplers on the ONE Championship roster today.
Saputra’s mastery of the mats speaks for itself, with his podium finishes in the freestyle wrestling category in two editions of the Southeast Asian Games.
Moreover, the Indonesian standout has seamlessly transitioned into MMA, winning five of his last seven outings by way of first-round submission.
Kingad expects nothing less from his upcoming opponent’s wrestling-heavy offense, and keeping it in check is what he feels will give him a leg up in their much-awaited encounter.
“I know I have to watch out for his wrestling, but he should also be ready for my ground game. I’ve worked on it and several more during training camp. I’m confident I can surprise him with a thing or two in the fight,” the Filipino ace stated.
The Team Lakay export's aura of confidence is pretty understandable, considering that he was one of the select few who attended Shinya Aoki's exclusive grappling seminar when the Japanese legend paid a visit to old rival Eduard Folayang in Baguio City, Benguet.
Along with his other stablemates, he had access to glance over a few pages of Aoki’s secret playbook.
“I undoubtedly picked up a lot from Aoki, who makes up for his lack of size and natural strength with simple techniques we frequently overlook in training. It is an honor to have the chance to train with him. I can’t wait to showcase everything I’ve learned from him in my upcoming fight,” said Kingad.
A week after Aoki’s trip to Baguio City, Team Lakay headmaster Mark Sangiao called for further reinforcement in the form of Ali Heydarabadi, an Iranian wrestling coach who played a vital role in the group’s resurgence in the mid-2010s.
Heydarabadi’s arrival came at the right time as it allowed Kingad to brush up on his wrestling a few weeks before flying to Bangkok.
Leaving no stone unturned in his preparation, “The King” is certain he can hold his own with Saputra on the ground.
“I’m more than ready wherever the match goes. It can be in striking, or we can take it to the ground. I know I have a lot of weapons in store for him,” Kingad declared.

Kingad to use Saputra for world title shot/Adiwang hyped for super showdown

Danny “The King” Kingad is oozing with confidence ahead of his return to action next month at ONE Fight Night 7: Lineker vs. Andrade II
Kingad will look to derail the red-hot Eko Roni Saputra when they tangle in a crucial flyweight MMA bout at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on 25 February, and he’ll be extra-motivated to do so, especially after his December return was postponed.
The third-ranked contender was initially scheduled for a Manila comeback against Gurdashan Mangat at ONE 164, but the Indian-Canadian had to pull out, forcing “The King” to further wait for his return to the ONE Championship Circle.
Now he’s eager for an impressive comeback, especially since he hasn’t stopped preparing - even after the cancellation of his previous bout.
“My training pretty much continued even after Mangat dropped out. I never stopped and I stayed in shape, so training and preparation is not an issue for me,” Kingad said.
Kingad won’t be facing a pushover against the Indonesian wrestling machine, but he believes that aside from Saputra’s wrestling, nothing will really threaten him.
“Eko Roni Saputra has been impressive. He’s on a seven-fight winning streak. What I see from him, though, is that he always favors his ground game and wrestling. That’s where he’s at his best, and that’s what I’ve observed from his previous fights,” he said.
“I’ve watched his every fight, and it’s the ground game that I have to worry about. Sure he had a knockout win, but his opponent wasn't a good striker.“
The Team Lakay dynamo knows that this match will be crucial for his goals moving forward, especially since he’s eyeing to be back on top by the end of the year.
Reeling off a shutout decision loss to Kairat Akhmetov, the 27-year-old knows that if he wants to get a shot at the ONE Flyweight World Title, it all starts by beating Saputra.
“My goal for 2023 is to get a good winning streak going,” he said.
“I’m coming off a loss, so I have to get back on the winning track, start a winning streak, and then become a World Champion before the year ends. That’s my goal this 2023.”
   ***
Lito Adiwang may be one of the premier Filipino fighters in ONE Championship, but he remains as big of a martial arts fan as anyone in the community.
The Team Lakay star is one of the best MMA strikers right now and the fight that he’s most excited about is the highly anticipated world title match between Superbon Singha Mawynn and Chingiz Allazov.
Superbon will defend his ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Title against Allazov in the main event of ONE Fight Night 6 on Saturday, January 14, at Bangkok’s Impact Arena.
Adiwang, in a recent interview with The MMA Superfan, said that the main event of ONE Fight Night 6 will surely be an electrifying contest. He also gave away who he’s rooting for in the matchup between two of the best kickboxers on the planet.
“Super eager and super excited to finally watch this fight. Because both of them are very superior fighters, they’re very good fighters so I’m very very excited about this match. But, I’m a fan of Superbon,” said Adiwang.
“Technically he’s got an edge on the way he controls the fight. He dictates the fight, so I’d give an edge to Superbon.”
The strawweight contender even said that Superbon would easily dominate Allazov in their fight and get the convincing unanimous decision victory.
“Outclass, total domination on points, by decision.”
Superbon is already one of the best Thai fighters of his generation with a perfect 3-0 record in ONE Championship and 113-34 in his whole career. The 32-year-old captured the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Title when he knocked out the legendary Giorgio Petrosyan at ONE: First Strike in October 2021.
He’s since defended the gold against Armenia’s Marat Grigorian at ONE X in March 2022.
Allazov, meanwhile, is on a three-fight winning streak inside the Circle and is coming off a unanimous decision win over Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong at ONE X to capture the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship.
ONE Fight Night 6 is available at watch.onefc.com as well as at One Sports and One Sports+ on Philippine television.

Loman aims to get belt/Kingad faces Saputra

>> Saturday, January 21, 2023

SPORTS

Stephen “The Sniper” Loman believes that he’s done all he could in 2022, and now he’s looking to use that momentum to make 2023 an even grander year for himself.
Meanwhile, Danny “The King” Kingad returns to the ONE Championship Circle next month against a fast-rising Indonesian MMA star.
Loman believes he’s ready to take the next step in his career after claiming two big wins last year, beating Japanese veteran Shoko Sato and routing former ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes.
“I’d look at it as a very good year,” Loman said.
“2022 brought me some of the biggest victories of my career, and I achieved my goals to take everything step by step, move my way up in the rankings, and beat some of the biggest names in the division. That year was a very good achievement for me.”
The past 12 months also taught Loman some valuable lessons, especially in his fights against Sato and Fernandes.
However, he knows that he’s going to have to grow, as he could face the winner of the Fabricio Andrade-John Lineker clash for the ONE Bantamweight World Title this February.
“I’ve learned a lot this year. Having fought both Shoko Sato and Bibiano Fernandes, I’ve seen that there will be no easy fights here. Both of them are veterans, and I’ve had to step up my game quickly,” he said.
“This year also taught me to push harder, persevere, knowing that the ones that I’ll be facing here are high-level veterans, so I have to push hard during training.”
With his 2022 mission accomplished, Loman is setting the bar higher this year. In fact, he plans to end the next twelve months with the ONE Bantamweight World Title around his waist.
“My goal in 2023 is to stay active, stay in tip-top condition, and the most important of it all, capture the championship belt. [I want] a chance to compete for that belt and bring that belt home.”
   ***
This, as Kingad returns to the ONE Championship Circle next month against a fast-rising Indonesian MMA star.
The #3-ranked flyweight faces Eko Roni Saputra on the main card of ONE Fight Night 7: Lineker vs. Andrade II on 25 February at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Kingad was supposed to join his Team Lakay squad in ONE’s return to Manila last December, but his opponent Gurdarshan Mangat had to withdraw from the bout due to injury.
Now Kingad will finally get a chance to bounce back after his decision loss to Kairat Akhmetov, and he’ll try to do that by stopping the red-hot Saputra, who’s riding a seven-fight winning streak.
In that stretch, Saputra scored five submissions, but he also proved that he’s got power in his hands after knocking out Liu Peng Shuai in 2021.
While he’s been taking care of business in the Circle, he hasn’t faced someone like Kingad.
Kingad might probably be the most explosive athlete on the dynamic Team Lakay roster, with his seemingly bottomless gas tank and non-stop motor.
That means he’s explosive enough to hang with the Indonesian’s wrestling and has the capabilities to light him up on the feet, should the match stay there.
While a win will be crucial for Saputra and his hopes of barging into the rankings, this bout is equally as important for Kingad, especially since he’s looking for a rematch against either Demetrious Johnson or Adriano Moraes.
Johnson and Moraes will be wrapping up their trilogy for the American’s ONE Flyweight World Title at ONE Fight Night 10 this May, and an impressive win for Kingad could put him right back into the World Title mix.
Kingad and Saputra will be joining a stacked card bannered by the massive rematch between John Lineker and Fabricio Andrade for the vacant ONE Bantamweight World Title.

Lito Adiwang pulls out of Malachiev bout

SPORTS

Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang’s return to the ONE Championship Circle will have to wait a little longer.
Adiwang bared that he’d have to rest further as the pain on his knees have been getting worse with three weeks to go from his supposed return bout against Masnur Malachiev at ONE Fight Night 6 set on 14 January at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Filipino shared that he consulted with his doctor again after feeling some pain on his knees while preparing for the bout, and he was advised to take medical attention and rest for 60 days barring any complications.
It’s a letdown for Adiwang, who’s so motivated to get back for his late father Crisantio.
“It’s heartbreaking that I have to break a promise to my father to fight this January. Also sorry to our fans and supporters who are eager and excited to watch me back in action,” Adiwang said.
“My mind is 1,000 percent ready to go to war but suddenly, my knee is not cooperating and it’s getting worse when I try to push it hard for training. As per the advice of my doctor, I’ll give it some time to recover and continue my therapy to strengthen it.”
The “Thunder Kid” tore his ACL last March in his All-Filipino match against Jeremy Miado at ONE X, and then he underwent surgery to fix his knee last May.
From then on, Adiwang has been plotting his return, actively strengthening his knee through various rehabilitation programs, from the basic ones to more intense ones like swimming.
He was doing pretty much okay when he returned to full contact training, but as the fight drew near, the pain in his knee seemed to bother him more, forcing him to reconsult with his physician, and eventually drop out of the fight.
Still, he sees the bigger picture that the delay doesn’t mean it’s the end for his comeback. It only means that he’s taking the necessary precautions to make sure he’s in the best shape of his life in his return.
“It’s heartbreaking to withdraw but I need to think for the best and look at the big picture,” Adiwang said.
“I may not fulfil my promise this time, but this made me focus to the bigger promise that I gave to both of my parents that one day I will become a World Champion.
“To ONE Championship, my opponent, fans and supporters, I’m sorry that I will not be able to compete this January in Bangkok but I will do my best to heal and recover as fast as I can and continue this fight. I’ll enter the Circle healthy and prepared to give the best show that I can give.”

Folayang takes on Marques in stacked ONE Fight Night 5 Card

Former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang has long carried the flag for the Philippines in the global mixed martial arts scene.
So when ONE Championship returns to the country for the first time in nearly three years, he’ll be riding one more time at the forefront.
Folayang returns to action when he takes on Edson “Panico” Marques at the already-stacked ONE Fight Night 5: De Ridder vs. Malykhin card set on the morning of December 3 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
OFN 5 is the first of two shows that day, starting at 9 a.m as it airs live simultaneously on US prime time through Amazon Prime Video.  Capping off the blockbuster Saturday is ONE 164: Pacio vs. Brooks which goes live in local prime time at 6:30 p.m.
“Of course I’m happy. I feel honored being put on the forefront of a card that will air live in US prime time through Prime Video, being one of the few Filipinos in that card,” Folayang said.
“It’s such a huge motivating factor for me because our trajectory is heading west, and I’d love to entertain our fans over there and make new ones.”
Folayang, 22-12, has long been one of the pillars of the promotion as he main evented the very first show of ONE in September of 2011. Since then, he’s won the ONE Lightweight World Title three times, establishing himself as the face of local mixed martial arts in the process.
Eleven years later, he’s still one of the most recognizable figures in the sport both in the Philippines and outside of it, so it’s no surprise to see him be included in the Amazon card.
“All I wanted to do is compete again and join this card. It doesn’t matter who I face. Actually I was waiting for [Yoshihiro] Akiyama but I think he turned down the offer in fighting me,” he said.
“Nonetheless, I’m grateful because I was included, and since the event will be in the Philippines for the first time in three years, I’m super excited. I’m looking forward to performing in front of my home crowd.”
Folayang joins the stacked morning show bannered by the clash between two titans when the unbeaten two-division World Champion Reinier “The Dutch Knight” De Ridder defends his ONE Light Heavyweight World Title against Anatoly “Sladkiy” Malykhin
Bannering ONE 164 is Folayang’s teammate in Joshua “The Passion” Pacio who defends his ONE Strawweight World Title against Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks

Eustaquio battles Hu, Kingad takes on Mangat in ONE 164

 SPORTS

Carlo Qunito

ONE Championship’s return to the Philippines just got more stacked with four fighters from Team Lakay being added to ONE 164: Pacio vs. Brooks at the Mall of Asia Arena set on the night of 3 December.
Former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio and current #4-ranked flyweight Danny “The King” Kingad are set to shake up the 135 pound division as they face different foes in the long-awaited Manila card.
Eustaquio targets his third straight victory in The Home of Martial Arts as he takes on “Wolf Warrior” Hu Yong in a match that could prove that “The Gravity” is far from done in the division he once ruled.
The 33-year-old Filipino is coming off impressive back to back wins, starting with his body kick finish of Toni Tauru before running circles around Min Jong Song to prove that he’s still continuously evolving.
Hu is a successful alumnus of ONE Hero Series and will be looking to bounce back following a decision loss to     Eustaquio’s old tormentor Yuya Wakamatsu and prove that new blood is taking over the division.
Kingad, on the other hand, will have his hands full as he takes on the in-form Gurdarshan Mangat in a match where he’ll basically be defending his fourth spot in the rankings.
“The King” suffered a unanimous decision loss to Kairat Akhmetov in his last outing where the Kazakh’s wrestling and control proved to be too much for the 25-year-old.
He won’t have it any easier in this match as he takes on Mangat who’s also knocking on the door of ranked contenders, having won his last two bouts – and four of his last five entering this contest.
Also added in the Manila card is promising atomweight Jenelyn Olsim and bantamweight Jeremy “The Jaguar” Pacatiw, two young fighters from the Northlands who are out to prove that they also belong among ONE’s long line of contenders.
Olsim takes on the hard-hitting Meng Bo in the atomweight scrap, with both women looking to break into the rankings with an impressive showing in this clash.
Meanwhile, Pacatiw takes on Tial Thang as he looks to rebound after a disappointing finish against Fabricio Andrade where he got folded by the Brazilian’s knee in the first round of their clash.
The four Team Lakay stars will join the last remaining title holder in the Philippines in the card as ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio takes on Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks in the main event of the night.

Eustaquio sees rival Moraes rising in Johnson rematch

When reigning ONE Flyweight Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes’ faces wily legend Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson at ONE 161 on August 26, no one will be watching the match as avidly as Moraes’ former foe, former ONE Flyweight Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio.
The two have fought each other three times inside the ONE Circle, so the Team Lakay stalwart is very familiar with how Moraes will bring it to DJ in their much-awaited title fight.
“I expect fireworks from both warriors. Both of them are fire-tested and both of them are legends. I expect nothing but a full display of mixed martial arts,” said the Igorot warrior..
But truth be told, Eustaquio is leaning more towards Moraes in this face-off. Regardless of their past rivalry, the Team Lakay star is very much proud of his former rival’s achievements in ONE Championship.
“Adriano, you have to remember that when all of them doubted you to win against DJ, you proved them all wrong by giving him his first career KO. You have to stay on that mentality and I wish you a safe and healthy competition,” he said.
He even gave a tip on how Moraes can repeat over DJ and still retain his ONE Flyweight Championship.
“Adriano needs to be unpredictable in order to retain the title, he has to move constantly because DJ is very crafty in playing the game. Adriano has all the tools and had them all tested before,” he said.
“Win or lose brother, you have proved more than enough to this sport. I am proud of being part of your journey. I wish you luck.”
Although the 33-year old former teacher recently accepted a challenge to face an up-and-coming ONE Flyweight contender in Gurdashan ‘Saint Lion” Mangat, he does not deny that he’s keeping his eye on the prize, and that is to get back in the Flyweight division rankings and grab a chance to do a 4-part against his former rival Moraes.
Ultimately, he wants to bring the ONE Flyweight World Championship belt back into the Cordilleras.
“If you are still the champion of our division then, there’s no escape brother. We will soon meet again. I’ll keep racking up victories and gamble on the title shot one more time,” he says resolutely. “God bless, brother.”

Warrior Adiwang: Collective strength needed after quake

>> Saturday, August 6, 2022

SPORTS

Carlo Quinto

Team Lakay star Lito Adiwang is positive that survivors of the recent earthquake in Northern Luzon are capable of getting back up, no matter how difficult it could be.
Adiwang said that his house in Baguio City got minor damages after a Magnitude 7.0 earthquake, which had its epicenter in the town of Tayum, Abra, devastated Northern Luzon this past Wednesday.
While he and his family are safe from the tremors, the same couldn’t be said for the others in the region.
The emerging ONE Championship star said that the recovery process from the ordeal will be difficult, but he knows that his fellow Filipinos will eventually get back on their feet sooner rather than later.
“I’m doing great and recovering well. I’m safe and so is my family from the earthquake. There are a few cracks outside the house, while our house also had some minor cracks. Unfortunately, some of the houses and buildings in Baguio totally collapsed,” said Adiwang.
“I know that it’s hard, we all do, especially now that there’s still the global COVID-19 pandemic and this earthquake happened. But we have to face the reality and get back up once more. We can do this, we can get back on our feet. We’ve been through stronger earthquakes before and we were able to recover. Our local officials are reaching out and helping, so we also have to do our part to help each other the best we can.”
Adiwang admitted that he was shocked when the earthquake hit, and one of the first things he did once the tremors stopped was to check on his family and his house.
The strawweight contender, however, couldn’t take the thought of his fellow Filipinos potentially suffering from the earthquake out of his mind.
“All I can do at this moment is to offer my words of inspiration that we can recover. I know it’s going to be difficult, but we have to help each other the best we can.”
Adiwang, who’s still recovering from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, doesn’t have a match lined up in the next ONE Championship events, but he’s still excited for the coming ONE on Prime Video 1: Moraes vs. Johnson II on August 27, Singapore time, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Team Lakay donates smart TV, education materials to Benguet Nat’l High School

Team Lakay isn’t just the home of martial arts warriors, the famed gym is also the stable of natural teachers.
This past week, former ONE lightweight world champion  Eduard Folayang spearheaded Team Lakay’s donation drive to Benguet National High School. Team Lakay collaborated with ONE Warrior Series and donated a 70-inch Android smart TV, a futsal set, a whiteboard, and a slew of educational toys to the school.
Folayang, together with his teammates at Team Lakay, turned over the equipment to BeNHS principal Nestor O. Dalay-on.
According to the school, BeNHS Special Education Teacher Mercy O. Gorospe purposely solicited the items for the school’s SPED students.
Also in attendance for the donation drive are ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua Pacio, former ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin Belingon, former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio Banario, Lito Adiwang, Edward Kelly, and Jeremy Pacatiw.
Team Lakay Foundation representatives Rogelio Capan and Jayvie Espada also attended the event.
Folayang, a career martial artist, is also one of the most learned individuals on the ONE Championship roster.
The 38-year-old is a licensed teacher with an education degree from the University of the Cordilleras in 2008. After passing the Licensure Exam for Teachers, Folayang taught English and Physical Education.
While he’s stepped away from the classroom, Folayang is still very much involved in the education process albeit in a non-conventional way.
Fondly called “Manong Ed” by his teammates and friends, the MMA legend is one of the most important voices in Team Lakay and he uses his influence to guide his younger teammates in life.
He may not have a match lined up yet, but he’s keen on watching ONE 159: De Ridder vs. Bigdash on July 22 with the event broadcasting live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Belingon: Loman can knock out Andrade

Stephen Loman has caught the eye of Brazilian star Fabricio Andrade. Andrade had approached Team Lakay Head Coach Mark Sangiao about wanting to face Loman next.
Teammate Kevin Belingon had high praises for Andrade, but remains confident that Loman can submit him.
“I think Stephen can submit him or knock him out,” Belingon said on Fabricio Andrade’s fixation on teammate Loman.
Belingon has heard that Fabricio Andrade has been eyeing his teammate Stephen Loman and he likes his pal's chances should the two young bantamweights collide.
Moments after his huge first round win over Kwon Won Il, Andrade approached Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao about facing the red-hot Filipino.
The Brazilian star even said that if he ever became the ONE Bantamweight World Champion, then his first defense would be against Loman.
Belingon said the 24-year-old better be prepared for the beating of his life since Loman, 27, isn’t betting anything on the judges.
“I think Stephen can submit him or knock him out. His striking is different, if they face I think he’ll either knock him or submit him,” Belingon said.
Loman, the #4-ranked contender in the bantamweight division, is yet to taste a loss in ONE Championship. His debut in the promotion was arguably his best fight to date.
The Team Lakay star decimated the erstwhile #3-ranked fighter Yusup Saadulaev in the first round of their bout at ONE: Winter Warriors II in December 2021.
Loman had no problems tagging Saadulaev in their fight and he ended the match with a cracking left overhand that instantly knocked the cobwebs out of the Russian brawler.
“I think Stephen is more complete, he can take you down and control and he has power and timing. So if that happens, for me I think Stephen can take him on,” said Belingon.
The former ONE Bantamweight World Champion, though, understands why Andrade’s been wanting a match with Loman.
Andrade is one of the fastest rising stars in ONE Championship going on a five-fight winning streak with the last three victories coming by way of knockout.
“Maybe Andrade just wanted to prove that he’s the best… He says a lot of things but he’s proving it in the Circle. He’s walking the walk. We’ve seen his previous fights, he really performed to the highest level. His timing is impeccable. He’s a great fighter.”
Just like any other fight fan, Belingon will keep tabs on ONE 159: De Ridder vs. Bigdash which will broadcast live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on July 22.
ONE 159 will feature a legacy-defining match between two-division world champion Reinier de Ridder and former ONE Middleweight World Champion Vitaly Bigdash.
De Ridder, who also holds the ONE Light Heavyweight World Title, will be making his second defense of the ONE Middleweight World Championship. Bigdash, meanwhile, wants nothing more than to regain the strap he once held from 2015 to 2017.

Kingad ready to face Mclaren in return bout

It seems the best fighters in the world are all after our Team Lakay warriors.
After #5-ranked flyweight contender Reece "Lightning" Mclaren submitted China's Xie Wei at ONE : 158 on June 3, the Australian identified Danny "The King" Kingad to be his next opponent of choice.
Kingad had defeated Mclaren in their first encounter, and to this strong callout, The King responded by saying he is ready to face Mclaren again, anytime and anywhere.
“Give me the date and place,” Kingad answered McLaren’s challenge.
Former ONE World Title challenger Danny “The King” Kingad has heard Reece McLaren’s challenge loud and clear, and he’s ready to face the Australian star at a moment’s notice.
The latter called Kingad out following his first-round submission victory at ONE 158 over Xie Wei.
Kingad and McLaren faced each other once before, with “The King” taking home a close split decision in their August 2019 clash at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES. It’s a rematch McLaren feels needs to happen.
On the other hand, the Team Lakay stalwart had no hesitation in accepting the challenge, and he wants it quick.
“I think he doesn’t believe that he lost in our first fight, that’s why he wants that rematch. Knowing Team Lakay and knowing myself, we’re not backing down from anyone. I’m ready if ever we fight each other again. Give me the date and place!” Kingad said.
McLaren, a natural grappler, has taken strides to upgrade his striking skills, working with legendary Muay Thai kickboxer John Wayne Parr recently at Boonchu Gym in Gold Coast. During his in-Circle interview with commentator Mitch Chilson, “Lightning” wasted no time and proposed a rematch against Kingad.
Kingad, who was watching from at home in Baguio City, shared his thoughts on McLaren’s most recent performance.
“An excellent performance from Reece! He was able to survive the killer right punch of Xie Wei. I was amazed and equally entertained by Reece. He really gave it his all during the fight and submit Xie Wei,” Kingad said.
Obviously, with their 2019 fight going the distance and with judges split down the middle, both men can make a solid claim for victory. However, it’s very clear that a rematch is more than warranted.
Fully embodying the Filipino warrior spirit, “The King” said he has no problems settling this matter in the Circle.
Kingad is the #4-ranked fighter in the stacked flyweight division and his 13 fights under ONE Championship featured some of the promotion’s top names.
The 26-year-old had a flying start in his ONE Championship tenure going 9-1 in his first 10 fights. Fighters who’ve fallen to Kingad include Yuya Wakamatsu, Tatsumitsu Wada, McLaren, and Senzo Ikeda.
But while he enjoyed a strong run of form at the start of his career, Kingad has hit a snag lately, going 1-2 in his past three fights. Those losses, however, were against the elite of the sport.
Kingad lost to the legendary Demetrious Johnson via unanimous decision in the final of the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix at ONE: CENTURY Part I in October 2019. His last loss was a unanimous decision defeat against former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat Akhmetov at ONE: WINTER WARRIORS II in December 2021.
True to his craft, Kingad said he’s bringing valuable experience after his loss to Akhmetov and he plans to use it against McLaren.
“Yes, my loss against Kairat taught me a lot. I saw a lot of areas that I need to work on after my last match. You can say my would-be fight with Reece, if ONE Championship will make it happen, is a kind of redemption match for me, but the most vital thing to do is answer Reece’s call-out,” Kingad said.

Folayang wants  rematch with  Alvarez

Carlo Quinto

Filipino superstar Eduard Folayang feels he has unfinished business with Eddie Alvarez.
The two mixed martial arts legends squared off at ONE: Dawn of Heroes with Alvarez taking the first-round submission win in front of a stunned Filipino crowd in August of 2019.
It was a match that perfectly displayed the strengths of the two fighters with Folayang raining down menacing strikes on the feet and Alvarez swooping in with his grappling.
Folayang said a rematch between him and Alvarez is indeed an intriguing prospect and he hopes that a second meeting between them could eventually happen sooner than later.
“Of course, that’s a great opportunity for me, it’s a great fight if that happens. It would be awesome if Alvarez vs. Folayang II does happen especially on my part. I really feel that I could’ve done something more in our previous fight.”
Folayang had the Mall of Asia crowd rocking in the first minute of the fight when he landed a brutal leg kick that sent the former Bellator and UFC lightweight champion to the mat.
Taking advantage of his downed opponent, Folayang proceeded to land a hellacious ground-and-pound on Alvarez.
Despite Folayang’s aggression, “The Underground King” managed to survive and eventually took top position. Alvarez then took Folayang’s back and slapped in a tight rear-naked choke to take the submission win 2:16 into the fight.
Folayang admitted that he made mistakes in his first fight against Alvarez, nevertheless, the former ONE Lightweight World Champion is eager to erase his errors.
“It wasn’t the outcome that I wanted. We all know that we all make mistakes in life. Even a small error could lead to disaster. That’s why I’m willing that Alvarez vs. Folayang II does happen,” said the Team Lakay elder.
The 38-year-old added he needs to undergo an intense training camp, harder than his previous ones if he eventually gets his rematch against the American legend.
“I feel that I have to drastically improve my striking and undergo an intense training camp if that fight with Eddie eventually happens,” said Folayang.
ONE Championship returns this July 22 with the stacked ONE 159: De Ridder vs. Bigdash which will be broadcast live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Just like any other fight fan, Folayang will be tuned in to ONE 159 especially with two title fights in the card.
Reinier de Ridder will defend the ONE Middleweight World Championship against former champion Vitaly Bigdash in the main event.
Striking superstars Janet Todd, the reigning ONE Atomweight Kickboxing World Champion, and Lara Fernandez will duke it out for the ONE Interim Atomweight Muay Thai World Title in the co-main event.

Jenelyn Olsim bares struggles in achieving degree

Carlo Quinto

Earning a degree is always a challenge, but completing your studies while being a professional mixed martial artist and a national athlete is an endeavor of the highest difficulty.
Such was the case with Team Lakay’s Jenelyn Olsim.
The atomweight contender recently obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Baguio but it wasn’t just her books and internship that she had to deal with.
Olsim, during the final stretch of her senior year, had to prepare and compete in the 2021 Southeast Asian     Games and for her return fight at ONE 158: Tawanchai vs. Larsen.
Nevertheless, the versatile fighter had more than enough perseverance to push through and achieve what she sought in both her scholastic and martial arts careers.
On top of obtaining her degree, Olsim captured a bronze medal in the Vovinam competition in the Hanoi SEA Games and also a crucial split decision win over Julie Mezabarba earlier this month.
“I think I’m living the life that I want and I’m happy about it. During those times when it got so hectic, I knew I had to fully focus, get organized, and strictly follow my schedule. When things get too distracting, I tend to reset things and I’m back in my focused state,” she said.
The 25-year-old added that she regularly talked to Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao and her mentors at Singa Law Office about what’s going through in her studies and career. This openness, subsequently, afforded her the support of her superiors.
“I experienced when things just snowballed and everything was happening all at once but I’m so proud that I didn’t stop. I pursued my studies and got my degree. It feels uplifting and empowering,” said Olsim.
“I admit that I find it difficult to balance everything and there were things that I had to sacrifice. Whenever I feel that my stress is building up, I always think of the why’s and think of what I’ve been doing in my career.”
Jenelyn Olsim finds role models in Eduard Folayang and Mark Sangiao
Team Lakay is not just the home of MMA world champions, it’s also the hub of some of the most accomplished fighters in the world of academics. This gave Olsim to find role models not just in martial arts but also in school.
Olsim said that Sangiao and former ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang were her role models because of what they achieved in MMA and at school.
“They are my role models, I genuinely look up to them and they inspire me to accomplish more. I always take their advice to heart, and one of those is that I should be focused on finishing my degree,” said Olsim.
Folayang was once an English and Physical Education teacher after obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of the Cordilleras while Sangiao taught at the same university’s Criminology Department while completing his Master's Degree.
“Knowing that they’re champions and they all pursued their degrees, of course, I wouldn’t be left behind,” said Olsim.

Filipino mixed martial arts icon Eduard “Landslide” Folayang may be late in his career, but maintains he is nowhere near the end as the veteran fighter believes he is merely turning to a new chapter in his illustrious career.
After conquering legendary Australian striker “The Gunslinger” John Wayne Parr in his first ONE Super Series fight, the 38-year-old Folayang revealed he is keen on facing either Yoshihiro ‘Sexyama’ Akiyama in a mixed martial arts bout or Sage Northcutt in a wushu vs. karate spectacle.
“Sure, ‘Sexyama’ is a very good challenge to pursue especially since he just came from a big win as well,” Folayang said.
Akiyama recently ended a feud with fellow Japanese great Shinya Aoki at ONE X. ‘Sexyama’ pulled off an emotional second-round technical knockout victory after he survived Aoki’s tricky submission attempts in the opening round.
And while Folayang says he isn’t sure whether or not he is willing to feature in another Super Series bout, a match against American sensation “Super” Sage Northcutt remains an enticing proposition.
“I’m honestly not sure about a Super Series fight but I really want a wushu vs. karate fight against Northcutt,” Folayang said.
Folayang and Parr put on an absolute classic at ONE Championship’s landmark 10th-anniversary show in Singapore last March. It was “Landslide’s” first win following a string of heartbreaking setbacks in MMA.
The two legends poured it all in a match that belied the years they’ve both put into their respective martial arts careers.
Though Folayang dominated the early going against Parr, the veteran Aussie turned back the clock to give the Filipino stalwart trouble in the final round.
Folayang, though, weathered Parr’s late attack and took home the unanimous decision win. Team Lakay’s elder statesman said his win against Parr was a gust of inspiration to him and it would motivate him in his future battles ahead.
“That win against JWP was a huge motivation-booster for me to keep going no matter what lies in my future fights,” Folayang said.
