Solon sets P10M for dorm: Mt Prov college students ‘luckiest’ in the country

BONTOC, Mountain Province – Students of the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College here could probably be the luckiest college students in the country. Aside from the full scholarship program and the subsidy being provided by provincial and municipal governments for poor but deserving students, Rep Victor S. Dominguez has earmarked an initial P10 million from his Priority Development Assistance Fund to jumpstart the construction of a dormitory within the school campus to cater to the lodging needs of the thousands of students from the different areas.

Dominguez is considered the Father of MPSPC as he worked out the establishment of the first State-run higher education institution in this landlocked province in 1992. He said establishment of a school dormitory would allow the students the chance to have conducive learning environment.

Due to expected huge amount to be spent in the construction of the male and female dormitories, the lawmaker said the project will be done in phases as he will get additional funds from other sources to facilitate the completion of the structures in the coming years.

Dominguez also rallied provincial and municipal officials to continue the bayanihan spirit which they have been observing over the past several years for the development of the institution by allotting funds from their own coffers to help in the construction of the dormitories. Several years back, some provincial and municipal officials, together with Dominguez, agreed to pool their resources to construct important facilities for the institution.

Dr Nieves A. Dacyon, MPSPC president, welcomed the development, saying that the construction of more amenities for the students would serve as a plus factor in attracting students to enroll in the institution as well as upgrade its facilities to ensure the delivery of quality education to its enrollees.

She added MPSPC has still a long way to go in terms of upgrading its facilities but the all-out support being shown by national and local officials is a big boost towards attaining such goal in the coming years especially that all roads to the province are undergoing rehabilitation. Dacyon said part of the school savings from the implementation of its resource-generation projects, particularly the full scholarship program which is funded by Dominguez and other local government units, will be used to construct additional structures in the Tadian campus. -- Dexter A.
