Bulacan farmers: Our families hungry due to P40M NFA debt to us
By George Trillo
GUIGUINTO, Bulacan – Increasing palay procurement of the National Food Authority in Bulacan has left over P40 million in payables to local farmers.
The farmers are now complaining their families are going hungry. Arturo Figueroa, NFA-Bulacan head, told that the P40 million accumulated as farmers increased their deliveries to the NFA, which buys palay at P17 per kilo compared to P16.50 from commercial rice traders.
“We are also giving local farmers an additional P1,800 as fertilizer incentive for every 50 cavans they deliver to us,” Figueroa said.
But farmers who took part in a province-wide rice caravan here yesterday said their families would starve if the NFA delays its payments for another week.
