>> Monday, June 24, 2013

BAGUIO CITY – A run for fun and funds with the theme, “Takbo Para Sa Matuwid na Daan,” shall be sponsored by the Department of Interior and Local Government Baguio office on June 29, near the Gangsa restaurant area at Burnham Park.

Part of the plans for the city’s 128 barangays next semester, the announcement was done by DILG Baguio office head Evelyn Trinidad during a Punong Barangays’ meeting at city hall.

Assembly and registration for the 3k and 5k runs with a P200 fee shall be at 5 a.m. as the race starts 6    a.m. which passes through Military Cut-off road and back.

The run will benefit city barangay projects.

Anastacia Tamayo of the Philippine National Red Cross also appealed for help from the punong barangays for a Miss Red Cross fund raising contest to be capped with the coronation of the royal court on Sept. 1, Baguio Day.

It was suggested that each district field an interested candidate, or what a barangay could support through the activity.

She also made a pitch for this coming month as World Blood Donors’ month. Insurance and membership through the PNRC for barangay officials should also be a priority for those concerned, she said.

The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) also goes on in the barangays, as representatives of the Regional Social Welfare and Development Office presented the provisions and specifications as stipulated by the law. Local officials are vital to the accomplishment of documents and reports, for the program as it is barangay-based.

Representatives from the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) also re-iterated the importance of accurate barangay reports to their city crime reports while Nic Guanzon of the City Health Department (CHD) appealed to the barangay officials as to their need for assistance in the control of Dengue-carrying mosquitoes. There is a need for the four o’clock habit, where mosquito breeding places such as water-laden containers should be emptied or cleared, Guanzon said. Dengue has significantly increased on the same period as last year, he added.

There are 106 confirmed cases for January to May 2013, while there are 48 in January to May 2012, which pegs the increase at 120%, Guanzon reported.

Also present during the meeting were Congressman Bernardo Vergara, Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Councilor Joel Alangsab also promised support to the programs and plans of the punong barangays. – Julie G. Fianza
