Hedcor
companies in Benguet, Ilocos Sur and Davao continue to
sustain 27 college scholars from its host communities for another academic
year.
It was an opportunity for Lealyn Villanueva,
16, when she was told that she qualified as Hedcor scholar. “I’m thankful for
this life changing opportunity given to me by Hedcor and for that I will do my
best in my studies and fulfill my dreams,” Villanueva voiced.
Villanueva is already on her second year as
accountancy student in University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City.
“Our scholar’s grades are much higher than
the passing mark we require. It is a testament that they are really doing great
in their studies,” says community relations officer for Luzon Hydro
Corporation, Manny Yapyapan.
Before they became full-pledge Hedcor
scholars, they underwent strict screening process based on the company’s given
guidelines. Aside from being a resident of Hedcor’s host community, they
attained academic excellence upon high school graduation. And lastly, they
passed the exam and interview by Hedcor.
At present, Hedcor has 13 scholars coming
from its different host communities in Luzon. Fourteen are from the south.
The grantees were given the freedom to choose
what degree to pursue and their full tuition fees are shouldered by Hedcor as
well as book and monthly allowances.
Last September 2013, Hedcor added another
licensed engineer from its roster of scholars. Registered Electrical Engineer,
Miguel Taypoc is an examplar of determination that the young scholars can look
up to. Taypoc is already working in Hedcor on its expansion projects
Since the program’s apprehension in 2000, 26
scholars already graduated and are currently working in the country and abroad.
Others are also absorbed within Hedcor company.
Aside from the collegiate scholarship
program, Hedcor also inspires high school students by giving out stipends to
achievers. In order to create an atmosphere conducive to learning, Hedcor also
donates school buildings, refurbish classrooms and joins Brigada Eskwela.
As a partner of choice to its host
communities, Hedcor gives back by engaging activities focused on education,
livelihood, health and environment.
