Horse-racing thrills visitors to Adivay fest

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Horse-racing thrilled visitors here last week, now become a regular event in celebration of the province’s founding anniversary.

Dubbed “Dongbani Kavajo” (horse race), the event took place Nov. 14 and 15.

According to acting provincial veterinarian Dr. Miriam Tiongan, the activity aimed to preserve culture and strengthen horse-powered eco-tourism while entertaining people from all walks of life.

Horse racing enthusiasts of the province and City of Baguio gathered to showcase their talents and skills while cultivating the spirit of sportsmanship.

The event will kicked off Nov. 13 with a parade from km 3,  to Pico en route to the Benguet Sports Center in Wangal for the gymkhana competitions and exhibition games.

Joining the race were D’  Valley Riders here, Itogon and Tuba groups including three groups from Baguio City namely the  Kavajo Handlers Association of Camp John Hay,  Wright Park Pony Boys and Country Club Horse Handlers.

Categories included big , medium, small, dwarf horse races, thoroughbreds, back stroke race, bronco race, sack race, egg relay rescue, kiddie race, pioneer’s race, lady jockey’s race, carambola race, senior citizens race and musical chairs.

Team-building competitions were also held: sack race relay, dwarf horse relay, flag relay, horse saddling, saddle run, salad eating, strawberry wine drinking including obstacle run race.

What used to be participated individually,was now a race among groups with cumulative scoring, Tiongan said.

First prize winner received P20,000 cash; second, P15,000:  third, P10,000.00 while three consolation prize winners received P5,000.00 each.

 Special prizes were also awarded for the following categories: committee race, P5,000.00; best in cowboy attire, P1,000.00; best in cowgirl attire, P1,000.00; and best horse, P1,000.00.

Spearheaded by the PVO, the horse racing event was hosted by D’ Valley Riders and Wright Park Pony Boys under the leadership of Satur Diaz of D’ Valley Riders. – Susan C, Aro
