BANGUED,
Abra – Four New People’s Army rebels recently surrendered to Philippine
Army troopers in the mountainous areas of the Ilocos and Cordillera regions.
Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Dominic Baluga,
commander of the Philippine Army’s 24th Infantry Battalion based in
Langangilang, Abra, said Aug. 26 that the four NPA rebels belonged to the
Kilusang Larangang Guerilya (KLG) – Montes, a group of NPA rebels operating in
the provinces of Abra, Mountain Province and Ilocos Sur.
“The surrender of these NPA rebels was
successfully initiated after their relatives relayed to us their planned
return to the folds of the national government,” Baluga said.
The
four NPA rebels have also surrendered their high-powered firearms.
“When the surrendered NPA rebels were
presented to Abra Governor Joy Bernos. They were given cash assistance to start
small livelihood enterprises while their children were assured of scholarship
grants once they enter college,” Baluga said.
