BAGUIO
CITY -- The Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction
and Management Council urged Cordillera residents to
prepare
for another possible super typhoon-like Lawin in October.
PAGASA Baguio Weather
Specialist engineer Danny Galati told a
CRDRRMC
meeting the weather bureau is monitoring weather disturbance which could
develop into another super typhoon which could hit the
country particularly Cordillera and Northern Luzon.
Galati said a low
pressure area along the Marianas Islands is likely to intensify into a Category
5 tropical cyclone equivalent to super typhoon which is possible to enter
Philippine area early October. Based on the Tropical Cyclone Forecast of the
Pagasa, at least twotropical cyclones are expected this October and four
more
in November to December.
He added track of said
weather disturbance is yet to be forecast
given its distance from PAR but the weather bureau is alerting the public and
local DRRMCs against possible heavy rains and strong winds.
“While it is still
outside PAR, it has a higher chance that will
intensify
and develop into a super typhoon. Although we cannot control the coming of
cyclones in our country, at least we can mitigate its potential impact,” he
said.
Galati said that the
weather announcement is not to scare the public but to let everybody
including the different government agencies and local government units prepare for worst case scenario.
Super Typhoon
Lawin, the third most intense
tropical cyclone worldwide in 2016, left the Cordillera region
with
21 confirmed casualties with 16 dead; four injured and one missing
and 119,134 families or 526,758 individuals affected.
It also left more than P6 Billion in damages
in
infrastructure
and in agriculture. -- PIA CAR
