Night market transfer eyed

BAGUIO CITY- The
transfer of the night market from Harrison road to Kayang street or other
available areas in the public shall be under thorough study, Mayor Mauricio
Domogan committed during the weekly media Ugnayan forum.
Available and secured
areas in the market may also be identified for the purpose, mayor further said.
Should Harrison road,
which is a national highway under the control of the Department of Public Works
and Highways be vacated, night time vehicular traffic is seen to improve.
The proposed transfer to
either first or second Kayang street which are city roads, would also benefit
walk-in vendors, in addition to the usual number, though the first come-first
serve basis applies. The Baguio City Market Authority (BCMA) facilitates the
vendors’ accommodation, it was known.
The city council
approved a proposed ordinance for the Harrison night market transfer to Kayang
St.
Accordingly, security
for the area is easier to provide.
For years, the
experimental night market served as livelihood for more than a thousand vendors
and generated revenues for the city with an average of P1.5 million every
month.
Suggestions that the
night market be transferred to Melvin Jones, Burnham Park never materialized as
there is opposition from the public who claim the park must be preserved. – Julie G. Fianza
