Baguio druggie gets life term

BAGUIO CITY — A drug dealer here was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay a P1 million fine.
Gregory Quela, 37, was arrested Nov. 27 last year after selling 1.97 grams of shabu worth P12,000 to undercover agents along Siapno Road.
“In the crime of illegal sale of dangerous drugs, the delivery of the illicit drug to the poseur-buyer and the receipt by the seller of the marked money consummate the illegal transaction. What matters is the proof that the transaction or sale actually took place, coupled with the presentation in court of the prohibited drug, the corpus delicti, as evidence,” Regional Trial Court Branch 61 Judge Lilybeth Sindayen-Libiran said in a decision Monday.
The court said Quela’s illegal drug trade was confirmed when he twice sold shabu to undercover agents prior to his arrest.
National Bureau of Investigation-Cordillera director Hector Geologo hailed the court’s ruling as yet another victory in the government’s war against illegal drugs.

NPA arms cache found in Isabela

CAMP DELA CRUZ, Gamu, Isabela -- Information from former New People's Army rebels whose identities were not revealed, led to the discovery of another arms cache in the province, the Army's 5th Infantry Division (ID) told media on Wednesday.
Maj. Jekyll Julian Dulawan, 5th ID public affairs division chief, said high powered firearms were recovered on Monday at Sitio Pili in Barangay Tappa in San Mariano town.
The recovered firearms were five M16 rifles that, according to the former rebels, were hidden by members of the Regional Sentro De Grabidad (RSDG) who left the communist organization due to hardships and misunderstanding.
"Bickering among the RSDG members ensued after their leader, Alias Yuni, was killed in a firefight with the 86th IB in San Guillermo town last March," Dulawan said.
Dulawan noted that since the loss of Yuni, RSDG could hardly recruit potential members after communities started withdrawing support.
Maj. Gen. Laurence Mina, 5th ID commander, thanked the former rebels for their commitment to provide truthful information leading to the discovery of the arms cache and the recovery of NPA war materials.
"With the cooperation of former rebels, the NPA's influence is now dwindling while their deceiving recruitment strategy has been exposed to the communities with little or no response from prospective recruits," Mina said.
Mina said all of these substantial accomplishments significantly weakened the CPP-NPA's capability to conduct hostilities against government forces.
On June 30 and July 1, six rebels from two groups of NPA personalities surrendered with their firearms in San Mariano town.
Seized from the surrenderees on June 30 were one M653 Elisco rifle, an M14 rifle and two M16 rifles.
