VIGAN CITY – The Dept.
of Agriculture in Ilocos confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF) in
this city after nine whole blood samples from hogs in various farms in Pantay
Fatima village tested positive of the disease.
In a recent statement, City Mayor Juan Carlo Medina said the infected premises and quarantine areas are identified and delineated.
“Cleaning and disinfection has been commenced and will be continuously implemented. Depopulation shall be done immediately for infected hogs and those exposed hogs within 500 meter radius from the infected premises. This can be expanded based on further surveillance. Disposal and burial shall be done to avoid contamination,” Medina said.
The local chief executive said the city government is also working on the speedy grant of indemnity fund for the affected hog owners and raisers, while coordinating with other pertinent agencies.
He said that prior to laboratory testing, all preventive measures were enforced, among others, the distribution of disinfectants, regular farm monitoring, and the enactment of legislation.
“While we are again faced with another health emergency, we assure you, with your partnership and cooperation, we can slowly and surely eradicate ASF,” he added.
In Sto. Domingo, Mayor Bryan Dexter Tadena issued a memorandum on August 27 strictly prohibiting the entry of live hogs and pork products from other provinces and municipalities to prevent the possible entry of ASF and to ensure the safety of the hog industry as well as the consumers.
Mayor Tadena advised all constituents to follow strict implementation of the preventive measures and good swine husbandry practices.
He urged hog growers to insure their animals with the Philippine Crop Insurance Company.
“If ASF symptoms are observed or there is a sudden death of hogs in your farm, kindly report immediately to the Municipal Agriculture Office,” he said. (JCR/AMB/PIA Ilocos Sur)
