Abra political families file poll bid; rivalry up

>> Wednesday, October 20, 2021

BANGUED, Abra — The race for the 2022 elections in Abra is shaping out to be a battle between two influential political families in the province.
Incumbent Gov. Maria Jocelyn Valera-Bernos will be running for vice governor to pave the way for the gubernatorial aspiration of her father, incumbent Bangued Mayor Dominique Valera.
Mayor Valera will be challenged by former Lagayan Mayor Jentrix Luna, son of former representative Cecile Luna.
Former mayor Ryan Luna, brother of Jentrix, takes on Mayor Valera’s wife, Mila, for the mayoral post of Bangued.
Joaquin Enrico Valera-Bernos, son of Gov. Valera-Bernos and grandson of Dominique and Mila, is running for the vice mayoralty post.
He is being challenged by Buc Roger Luna, brother of the incumbent mayor.
For the province’s congressional race, incumbent Rep. Joseph Sto. Niño Bernos, brother-in-law of Governor Valera-Bernos, will be pitted against Dendrei Luna-Ifurong, daughter of Cecile and sister of the incumbent mayor.
Mary Ann Bersamin, daughter of the late representative Luis “Chito” Bersamin and niece of former governor Eustaquio “Takit” Bersamin and former Supreme Court chief justice Lucas Bersamin, is challenging the Valeras and Lunas for the capital town’s mayoralty post.
Jay Monador Go, brother-in-law of Governor Valera-Bernos, is seeking election for the mayoralty post in Bucay town while the wife of Rep. Bernos, Menchie, is seeking reelection for the mayoralty post of La Paz town.
Esther Bernos, mother of Rep. Bernos, wants to get reelected as vice mayor of Danglas while her daughter, Denise Florence Bernos-Bragas, aims to remain as mayor of the same municipality.
Meanwhile, the police said they will keep a close eye on the political scene in Abra because of a history of violence in the province, especially during elections.
Abra has always been identified as one of the areas of special concern in past elections because of the proliferation of election-related violence.
In the Mountain Province, the lone congressional district is being disputed by incumbent Rep. Maximo Dalog Jr. and former Sabangan Mayor Jupiter Dominguez while the province’s gubernatorial post is a battle between incumbent Gov. Bonifacio Lacwasan Jr. and newcomer Albert Paday-os.
In Kalinga, Rep. Allen Jesse Magaoang is unopposed in seeking his third term in office while the gubernatorial race is a toss-up between incumbent Gov. Ferdinand Tubban and former vice governor James Edubba. During the May 2019 gubernatorial elections, Tubban beat Edubba by a mere 10 votes.
In Ifugao, Rep. Solomon Chungalao is seeking another term in Congress against Gov. Eugene Balitang and Lamut Mayor Mariano Buyagawan while current Gov. Jerry Dalipog is unopposed in the 2022 polls.
