BSU sets opening of medicine course

of the College of Medicine by 2023 as groundworks on infrastructure and

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet
– The Benguet State University (BSU) here is now working on the opening of
a College of Medicine by 2023 as groundworks on infrastructure and licensing
are being done.
Dr. Felipe Comila, BSU president, during the virtual “Kapihan” for its 105th anniversary, said last week the infrastructure preparation and licensing for the opening of the new course are ongoing which will be completed by mid of 2022.
"By the second or third quarter of next year, we will see the light after the tunnel. We will have the full implementation by 2023,” he said.
The BSU located in the capital town of la Trinidad will be the first state university in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) that will have a College of Medicine.
This is in time with the passage of Republic Act 11509 or the “Dockor para sa Bayan Law” that was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in May 2021, which establishes a medical scholarship and return service program for deserving students in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs).
Comila said the opening of the course will also complement an earlier ordinance passed by the provincial government of Benguet that allows giving of scholarship to a native from the 13 municipalities who wants to take up a course in Medicine.
“That is 13 doctors every year that will be added to Benguet alone,” he said.
Being the first in the Cordillera, Comila said this is allowing more Igorots who have the mindset and confidence to come in and take up medicine despite financial incapacity.
Aside from opening the College of Medicine, he said they have also increased the slots for the College of Nursing, adding two more sections.
The college of nursing is also doing well in terms of performance in the national licensure examination having maintained a 100 percent passing mark since its opening in 1990 and its first graduate taking the examination in 1994.
BSU which is also expanding its courses and opening them in other campuses located in the towns of Bokod and Buguias and soon in Kabayan has noted an increase in population for the first semester of the school year 2021-2022.
Based on the statistics provided, the enrolment in the undergraduate courses increased by 32 percent this year compared to last year’s enrolment of 6,841.
The Masteral degree courses recorded a 42 percent increase which is now 1,415 while the doctorate courses logged a 65 percent increase. -- PNA
