SADANGA, Mountain Province — A former policeman running for mayor of Sabangan town and seven other persons were arrested after being caught transporting some P2.28 million worth of marijuana here Wednesday, authorities said.
Among those arrested was Sonny Kalaw, 36, former policeman based in Manila who is a candidate for mayor of Sabangan in next year’s elections, the PDEA-Cordillera said in a report.
Kalaw is a native of Data, Sabangan.
Anti-narcotics agents and policemen reportedly first intercepted a group of three men transporting marijuana aboard a car in Sitio Ampawilen, Barangay Poblacion Wednesday morning.
A Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency report said a total of 148 bricks and six “tubes” of dried marijuana leaves worth P18.48 million were seized from the three, identified as Jorge Eyawon, 34; Dario Diway, 23; and Jake Caesar Linchangan, 19, all of Tabuk City, Kalinga.
Kalaw and his companions Jonathan Abella, 37; Jeric Sansano, 30; Samson Damaso, 28, and a 17-year-old male were intercepted in Oowayen, also in Poblacion.
Nineteen bricks of dried marijuana leaves worth P2.28 million were found in the van that they were riding, the PDEA-Cordillera said.
Gil Castro, PDEA-Cordillera director, said all eight arrested persons are under custody while charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Law are being prepared against them.
A separate report from the Police Regional Office in Camp Dangwa, La Trinidad, Benguet said the five drug personalities were arrested at Sitio Oowayen, Poblacion, Sadanga on Oct. 13.
Cordillera police director Brig. Gen. Ronald O. Lee, citing reports of Sadanga police, said a person approached the personnel manning the checkpoint at Sitio Oowayen and informed them that a van parked approximately 3 km from the checkpoint had a flat tire.
Police offered to help fix the vehicle.
When police approached the vehicle, they saw pieces of bullets, fired cartridges and marijuana bricks put in a yellow sack.
The police report said seized were 19 bricks of dried marijuana leaves weighing around 19 kilos worth P 2,280,000, 16 fired cartridges for Cal. 9mm handgun and nine live bullets for Cal. 9mm.
Inventory of seized items was witnessed by barangay chairman Eliang Anongos; kagawad Ben Faguingas and kagawad Agnes Sacyafen all of Poblacion and Valerie Taguba, media representative.
The arrested suspects were brought to the custody of Sadanga MPS while the minor was turned-over to MSWDO.
Cases for violation of Republic Act 9165 or Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 were filed against them.
