Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has bared a plan to create a Peoples' Council composed of sectoral representatives to strengthen participatory governance and transparency.
He said they were preparing an ordinance for the creation of the Peoples' Council inspired by the good governance strategy of former Dept. of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo.
Building these effective, transparent, and participatory institutions such as the Peoples' Council is part of the government's strategies to promote responsive, people-centered, technology-based, and clean governance towards the achievement of the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, he said.
The PDP 2023-2028 aims to reinvigorate job creation and accelerate poverty reduction by steering the Philippine economy back to its high-growth trajectory and effect economic and social transformation for a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient society.
Creation of a people’s council would be advantageous to the city as a form of check and balance against policies or transactions regular city officials might have overlooked.
This would also serve as a deterrent to wrongdoing like red tape or corruption as government workers or officials would be wary knowing they are being watched by the people’s council
