Legislators press role in addressing road mess

BAGUIO CITY – The City Council here pushed a more active role in addressing heavy traffic here, which had been a problem over the years.
The Council recently told the Traffic and Transportation Management Division of the City Engineering Office to provide the legislative body within two months a report and recommendation whether or not it was possible to revert to 2- way traffic T.M. Kalaw St., Harrison road, Baguio Convention Center and Gov. Pack Road.
Under Resolution 555, series of 2023, the council said the TTMD-CEO is the local government’s lead office in studying and proposing appropriate traffic schemes and road management solutions to ease the congestions and heavy traffic within the city.
One urgent concern discussed by the local legislative body during its deliberation on the traffic situation along said roads.
Under resolution 556, series of 2023, city officials also requested the TTMD-CEO and the Traffic Enforcement Unit – Baguio City Police Office (TEU-BCPO) to furnish the body its reports and recommendations on traffic experiments conducted within the city in compliance to Ordinance No. 21, series of 2011 within 30 days upon receipt of the said measure.
The council said a comprehensive report was needed to enact an ordinance to continue traffic schemes which have been proven to be beneficial to the public and revert those that have already lapsed and have no effect to ease the traffic situation of the city.
Section 2.1 of ordinance 21, series of 2011 stated the experiment shall be conducted for a period not exceeding six months.
Upon the lapse of the 6-month period and no ordinance is enacted, the traffic scheme will automatically revert to its status before the experiments.
The body said traffic experiments along city roads have long been and are still being done to ascertain schemes that will ease worsening traffic congestion in the city, especially in the central business district area. -- Dexter A. See
