Woman, 2 sons held for marijuana pushing
SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – A woman and her three sons were caught by policemen here morning of Sept. 4 while they were about to transport 34 kilos of marijuana to Manila.
Mayor Pablo Ortega identified the suspects as Ellen Sumilip, 56, her two sons Juan Jr. and Dario, 21, and her son-in-law Gabby Gayaso, 37, all residents of Lon-oy, San Gabriel, La Union. Ortega said the suspects were caught by policemen led by Supt. Rolando Bersola, city police chief about 5 a.m. while they were waiting for a bus bound for Manila on Quezon Avenue here.
“They placed the marijuana in four backpacks which were neatly packed in bricks,” Ortega said. “They were arrested with the help of an informant.” La Union police director Sr. Supt. Franklin Bucayu said the mother admitted they had delivered thrice of same volume of marijuana to their buyer whom they met in Camatsili near the monument of the Cry of Balintawak in Quezon City.
“She said that it was supposed to be their forth shipment but luckily, we were able to trap them,” Bucayu said. He added the 34 kilos marijuana valued at P100,000 had a street value of P250 per gram. The suspects were detained in the city jail here. – Jerry Padilla
Two teenagers file rape charges against suspects in Ifugao
BANAUE, Ifugao -- Two teenagers allegedly raped in separate incidents in the province recently filed charges against the suspects.
Police said sometime in Dec. 1997 at Sitio Mabulod, Palawig, Banaue, a 17 year old elementary graduate, and a resident of this place was allegedly raped by her own uncle identified as a certain Henry Costales, married and a resident of the same place.
Investigation disclosed when the victim was still in grade one, the suspect let her live with them purportedly to help her in her studies. During the victim’s stay at their residence, she used to sleep at the house of her friend.
But one night on Dec. 1997, the suspect went inside the room where the victim was sleeping and allegedly raped her. The suspect reportedly threatened to kill the victim if she revealed the incident to anyone.
Police sometime in June this year, almost ten years after, the suspect attempted to rape the victim again but she fought back and was able to escape.
She immediately reported the incident to her mother that prompted the latter to file a formal complaint against the suspect. The case was now filed at the Prosecutor’s Office in the capital town of Lagawe.
In another similar incident, a 17-year-old girl met the same ordeal sometime in March this year at about 11 p.m. at Natuwolan, Cudog, Lagawe.
The victim, a native of Cabugao, Apayao and at present residing at the place was allegedly raped by a certain Floyd Lunag who also resides at the same place. Investigation disclosed the victim was alone watching TV in the living room at the house of her employer when the suspect who was under the influence of liquor, entered the living room, switched off the light and television set then allegedly raped the victim.
Sometime again in June this year at around 11 p.m. the victim was again raped inside her room at the apartment of her employer at Rizal St., Dullagan, Poblacion, Lagawe by one Gemo Babayungan. The victim is now under the care of Dept. of Social Works and Development while a case of rape was filed at the provincial prosecutor’s office in Lagawe, Ifugao.
Most wanted man in Pangasinan nabbed
SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan – Police nabbed a 28-year-old man here last week who was listed as one of “top 20 wanted persons in Pangasinan.”
City police chief Pagador identified the suspect as Marlon de Guzman y Pacleb, married, of Barangay Matagdem. He was arrested by warrant officers SPO4 Diosdado S. Cayabyab and PO2 Randy F. Bandong.
De Guzman was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Anthony Q. Sison of Branch 57 in the city for rape with no bail recommended. The suspect was detained in the San Carlos police jail. – Jerry Padilla
Man carrying marijuana bricks nabbed in Tabuk
TABUk, Kalinga – A 37-year-old man was arrested recently by anti-narcotics operatives for possession of three bricks of dried marijuana leaves at a mobile checkpoint set up here at F.F. Cruz, Bulanao.
Supt. Arne Dean Emock, regional police information officer identified the arrested suspect as William Ayangwa Tiwang, 37, single, jobless, native of Tulgao, Tinglayan town.
Policemen and drug enforcement agents earlier received information several marijuana bricks would be transported to Tabuk by the suspect on board a jeepney.
2 men shoot dead tricycle driver
BANGUED, Abra – A tricycle driver was shot dead recently when two motorcycle riding armed men fired at him at the corner of Dimaoal and M.H. del Pilar street, Zone 6, this town. A woman pedestrian was also wounded when she was hit by a stray bullet.
Police identified the victim as George Penera Pastores, 45, married, tricycle driver, of Barangay Patucannay, Bangued.
Police said the victim was driving his tricycle with one passenger identified as Jenrel Danao, 12, student of Holy Spirit Academy, of Zone 6, Bangued, when two armed men on board a motorcycle drove alongside the tricycle and suddenly fired at Pastores. Martin said the victim suffered a bullet wound in the head, which killed him instantly.
A pedestrian identified as Elema Balderas Mendoza, 44, single, of Iglesia ni Kristo compound, Zone 1, Bangued, was hit by a stray bullet. The suspects immediately sped away. – Dexter A See
Region 3 new PNP director exhorts cops
CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga – Chief Supt. Errol T. Pan, new police director of Region 3, urged policemen and policewomen in Central Luzon to be more productive, efficient, and effective as law enforcers.
General Pan took over last week as regional director here after several postponements. Pan replaced Chief Supt. Perfecto Palad, who, in turn, was also designated as director of the Traffic Management Group in Camp Crame, the position vacated by Pan.
The turnover was witnessed by Philippine National Police chief Director-General Oscar Calderon who was the guest of honor and speaker during the turnover rites.
In his remarks, Calderon expressed his gratitude to all Central Luzon policemen for their unwavering support and undying loyalty to the profession they had chosen – “that of being enforcers of the law over and above their personal interest.”
In his acceptance speech, Pan said he is confident everything will work out smoothly as far as the officers, men, women, including the non-uniformed personnel of the Police Region 3 Office, are concerned. -- Mar Supnad
