TABUK, Kalinga-- The Million Volunteer Run here Dec. 4 registered 320 runners raising P204,000 for the Philippine Red Cross Kalinga Chapter.
PRC Chapter Head Glorina Diaz said the amount can go higher because of late registrants on the day of the run.
The Kalinga Chapter organized the run in support to the nationwide Million Volunteer Run of the Red Cross in celebration of the 2011 International Year of Volunteers with the theme, “Promoting Health, Saving Lives.”
Adding fun to the activity, Diaz said organizers distributed on-the-spot incentives of P500 each to participants of the run for the oldest runner, youngest runner, fastest runner and P100 each to 11 young runners aged 10 years below.
The oldest runners were Ricardo Villafuerte, 71 and SaludDalsen, 66 while youngest runner was Emmauz Donald Macad, 3.
Run organizers collected a registration fee of P500 from each participant as donation to the Red Cross fund.
Diaz said proceeds of the run would be used to enhance the 1-4-3 project of Red Cross of putting-up service teams composed of one leader and 43 volunteer members in every barangay of Kalinga.
Each service team was comprised of three smaller action teams namely barangay disaster brigade with nine members, barangay health workers with nine members and the remaining 25 are ready potential blood donors.
PRC is giving continued capability trainings to the teams making them ready during disasters and this is where some of the funds would go, Diaz disclosed.
Aside from generating fund support for the Red Cross, the run also aimed to enter a world record in people’s run event by breaking Australia’s record of 250,000. There is no update, though, on the record yet as of press time from organizers.
