BAGUIO
CITY -- The city government here will spend P27 million for the hauling of tons
of garbage before the opening of classes this month.
Baguio
City Mayor Mauricio Domogan announced Wednesday that his office had recommended
P90 million for the hauling of the garbage but the city council approved P27
million only.
The
city government has been working to solve the garbage problem in the mountain
resort.
To
date, the city which generates more than 2,000 tons of solid wastes daily has
still no engineered sanitary landfill (ESL) despite its vigorous efforts to
have one over the past five years.
Domogan
admitted that while the P120 million recycling and composting system did help
rid the city of biodegradables in the past two years, the system apparently was
still inadequate for the increasing volume of garbage.
The
city mayor also lamented the apparent lack of discipline of waste generators
within the city market and Magsaysay Avenue area.
He
said that according to the city government's sanitary officials, residents in
the two areas do not segregate.
