DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan – Sixteen patients of leptospirosis died  while 88 total cases were reported here in the first nine months of 2018.
Dr. Ophelia Ticsay, City Health Officer said leptospirosis cases in Dagupan City soared last month when massive flooding gripped the city due to monsoon rains.
In the first nine months of 2017, only 35 cases and two fatalities were reported and recorded.
As of Tuesday, 17 barangays here remain flooded as a result of rains triggered by typhoon Ompong.
The flooded barangays are Bacayao Sur, Bacayao Norte, Herrero-Perez, Malued, Pogo Grande,  Lasip Grande, Lasip Chico, Pogo Chico, Salisay, Mangin, Mayombo, Pantal, Tapuac, Lucao, Barangay 2-3, 4 and Poblacion Oeste
Residents in these areas are at high risk of acquiring leptospirosis.
Health authorities stressed that residents exposed to flood waters should promptly seek medical attention and consultation and not resort to self- medication if flu-like symptoms persist.
Avoiding exposure to flood waters or wearing boots are among the measures that can protect individuals from leptospirosis.
