Baguio DepEd teachers, students stand out in awards, competitions

BAGUIO CITY -- Department of Education (Dep-Ed) Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Marie Carolyn Verano led teachers, coaches and talented students who are standouts in different aspects at the regional and national levels.
    The awards were part of the Dep-Ed Baguio report presented by OIC Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Christopher Benigno during the city hall flag raising ceremony last week.
    The Dep-Ed Baguio Division teachers were awarded for excellence in public service, while the students excelled in journalism, music, arts, dance and the use of Arabic language.
    Joining nine other educators, SDS Verano was awarded as one of the most inspiring teachers (MIT) of the country. A citation for the MITs stated that they are “judged in achievements, have undergone and survived great trials through sheer determination and persistence, have deep positive values inculcated within, and that their lives should be emulated.”
    In the regional level, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) Pag-asa Lingkod Bayan was awarded to Senior Education Program Specialist Jovelyn Petra Balantin of Baguio Schools Division Office (SDO) and Baguio City National High School (BCNHS) Teacher III Jerry Manogan.
    Said awards are given to public servants who have contributed an idea or performed excellently for the direct benefit of more than one department of the government.
    Another CSC award, the Dangal ng Bayan which honors the conduct of positive influence to others, or the observance of high standards and ethics in the discharge of official duties was accorded to BCNHS Principal IV Brenda Malecdan Carino.         The award also epitomizes commitment to service, professionalism, justness, political neutrality, being responsive to the public, nationalism and patriotism, commitment to democracy, and simple living.
    For online and teaching through broadcast, Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH) teacher of the Baguio Central School, Frank Lloyd de Guzman was chosen from among the 3000 teachers nationwide who auditioned for the post. The search was conducted from Sept. 7 to 9.
    De Guzman is now undergoing training in the field of broadcast with education as prioritized service.
    The Baguio City High School Special Program for Arts (BCHS-SPA) also has national rondalla qualifiers, musically-gifted students John Sacley and Flickinger Auric Carias with coach Ellen Ruth Sagsagap who virtually performed the piece “Tingog sa Paglaum” (Sounds of Hope),for the 2020 National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA).
    In the Regional Press Conference done in Rizal, Kalinga done in December 2019, Baguio was proclaimed as over-all champion.
    For the National Press Conference in Tuguegarao City on March 8-13, 2020, individual recognition was accorded to elementary pupil Kristelle Anne Laguardia from Magsaysay Elementary School for placing 6th in Pagsulat ng Lathalain with Tinig ng Masa as school newspaper and Julie Estoro as adviser.Crystal Mae Punzalan of Mabini ES is 5th place in the same category, with Ang Tanglaw as school paper and Bonnie Garrete Limayog as adviser.
    In the category Pag-uulo at Pagwawasto ng Balita (Filipino), Angela Annie Soriano of Rizal ES placed 4th, with Ang Rizalian as school paper and Anabel de Guzman as school paper adviser.
    For radio script writing and broadcasting (English), secondary level, SLU Laboratory High School students Kezer Joshua Galindon, Jan Mae Aguado, Jasper Dhane Bondad, Krista Mae Samson, Ryand Angelo Ugalde, Jean Michael Tejada, Devy Lee Garcia with coach Charmaine Penalba won 2nd place in best news script writers; 3rd place, best in radio production; and 5th place, best in infomercial.
    For television script writing and broadcasting (English), secondary level, University of Baguio Science High School students Lleana Catherine Somera, Khalil Michael Maximo, Jariel Que, Dorothea Barril, Lorreanne Contessa Belingon, Joaquin Angelo Go-aco and Nisha Anne Umila won 6th place in Best Technical Application and 7th place Best in Infomercial, with Kevin Jake Angyab as coach.
    Students also excelled during the National Festival of Talents on March 9-13 in Ilagan, Isabela with the BCHS SPA dance group winning first place in the “Bayle sa Kalye,” and the BCHS SPA choir/rondalla winning second place in Likhawitan.
    Irisan national high school students Danielle Boromeo won 2nd place in “Singing Idol,” with Prince Lee Lingbanan in third place for Character on Parade; both during the festival of talents Special Program in Foreign Language. during the National Festival of Talents.
    In the same competition, Sophia Lorraine Dimaunahan, Gian Franscine L Ampaz, Ma Teresa Serrano, Alexander Theodore Sison, with their coach Mary Luz Dela Cruz; won third place in Tagisan ng Talento (Filipino) Interpretatibong Pagbigkas.
    For the Musabaqah - 4 skills, Fahd Soaiman won 4th place in Arabic spelling, while Ayana Pundogar won 2nd place for Harf touch. Both had Samia Omar as their coach.
