PNP: Black Widow in mourning rebel leader

SAN ANTONIO, Nueva Ecija – An innocent-looking widow who has been previously arrested for theft turned out to be a ranking guerilla amazon.
She was uncovered through a piece of blood-stained paper wrapped around a one peso coin with a threat written on it.
Town police chief Major Roderick Corpuz, said the involvement of a certain alias “Ka Sabel” in the rebel movement was discovered when an unidentified person threw a paper-wrapped coin with “Ang tigas ng ulo mo Ka Sabel, nagpatuloy ka pa rin (You’re so stubborn you still went ahead with it)” into female custodial facility at around 2 p.m. on Sept. 5.
Corpuz said that a police duty jailer was on a routine jail inspection when the “letter” was noticed. Upon inspecting and reading what was written in the paper, an inquiry among female detainees was done, during which “Ka Sabel” confessed her involvement with the NPA rebel group.
“Ka Sabel,” whose identity is temporarily withheld, 37, was residing in Sta. Barbara, Nueva Ecija.
She was facing qualified theft when she allegedly stole a laptop from her employer.
During interrogation, the amazon reportedly admitted she was the head of a platoon in Bagong Hukbong Bayan (BHB) based in Barangay Sibug, Gen. Tinio, Nueva Ecija, which operates in Gabaldon, also in Nueva Ecija, as well as in Camiling, Concepcion, and Sta. Ignacia in Tarlac.
They were known in the locals as “Ligaw na Talahib” under a certain “Ka Ligaya.”
“Malalim po ang doktrinasyon ni Ka Sabel, kasi ayon sa kanya, isa raw supremo ng kilusan ang kanyang namayapang lolo na dating kumikilos sa Quezon province (Ka Sabel is deeply indoctrinated.
Her late grandfather was a supreme leader in the movement),” said Corpuz, adding that the person who threw the coin into the custodial facility belonged to the rebel group. “Akala po siguro nila (NPAs), kusang sumuko si Ka Sabel (Maybe they think she voluntarily surrendered).” She was arrested on account of the theft crime lodged against her.
Corpuz also revealed that Ka Sabel confessed there were an Armalite rifle and two hand grenades concealed in her house but they were nowhere to found when police made a search.
Ka Sabel’s husband was abducted by people believed to be rebel comrades. His skeleton were recovered in Pantabangan sometime in March this year, Corpuz added. — Ariel Avendano
