BAUKO, Mountain Province -- The Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera Administratuve Region (DoST-CAR) led the groundbreaking for the Cableway for Agricultural Resource Transport System (Carts) project at Monamon Sur recently.
The cable car project, funded through the Niche Centers for the Regions program of the DoST and counterpart from the Bauko local government unit (LGU), will provide an alternative transportation system for agricultural products and activities in the province.
The difficult terrain had hampered smooth and fast delivery of the produce of the farmers to the nearest trading center inside and outside Mountain Province.
DoST Executive Director Dr. Enrico Paringit, during the program held at the Mount Data Hotel, said the project is a product of innovation that brings sustainable and resilient activities to the community.
It will be beneficial in advancing the state of agriculture and providing sustainable sources of livelihood for residents living in remote communities, according to Paringit.
He said the project is a collaboration of various stakeholders in Cordillera.
Also showing their support during the event were staff of project Carts, DoST-CAR and Mountain Province representatives, Bauko and Mountain Province LGU officials,Towaden-Bito Farmers Association project beneficiaries and other stakeholders.
The project, which is under the Program Boondock: A Mountain Engineering Center Toward Sustainable Infrastructure and Upland Water Security, is expected to be completed in May next year.
Experts had strongly recommended a cable car system in strategic areas in the Cordillera to allow the timely transport of the agricultural produce of the farmers to the nearest trading center.
They said cable cars are environmentally friendly and will help in mitigating effects of climate change on the local agriculture industry.
