NARVACAN, Ilocos Sur – Former Ilocos Sur
Governor and incumbent town Luis ‘Chavit’ Singson brushed aside the
disqualification case filed by a rival for this municipality’s mayoral post.
“There is no question about the legitimacy of
my residency in this town as it was approved by the court, so where is the
problem there?” said Singson.
Singson said Edgardo
Zaragoza’s bid to have him disqualified in the 2019 midterm elections is a sign
of desperation since he is bound to lose.
“Mabuteng la ni Zaragoza
nga maabak kaniak isu nga ipapa disqualify nak ta ammona nga abakek isuna”
(Zaragoza is just afraid to lose to me, so he tries to disqualify me), said
Singson.
In his petition,
Zaragoza said Singson’s certificate of candidacy should be denied due course or
cancelled because it contains a misrepresentation regarding his eligibility to
run for mayor of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur with the intent to deceive and mislead
the electorate.
“However, respondent
does not possess the one-year residency requirement under the law. Respondent
made a false representation in his COC when he declared under oath that he is
eligible to run for mayor stating that he resides in No. 353 National Highway,
Brgy. Sulvec, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur and has been residing there for more than
four years, when the truth is he is neither a resident nor is he domiciled in
Narvacan,” Zaragoza said in his complaint filed before the Commission on
Elections on November 12.
