Raps filed vs Nueva Ecija mayoral bets’ aides over shootout

By Ric Sapnu

GENERAL TINIO, Nueva Ecija -- Charges have been filed against supporters of rival candidates for mayor here who figured in a shootout on night of May 6, two days before the elections.
Brig. Gen. Matthew Baccay, Central Luzon police director, said charges for violation of the election gun ban and five counts of frustrated murder were filed against 19 security personnel of Mayor Isidro Pajarillaga, who sought reelection.
Five supporters of Pajarillaga’s opponent Virgilio Bote were charged with violation of the gun ban and illegal possession of firearms.
Baccay said the conduct of elections in Central Luzon was generally peaceful despite the “isolated” shooting incident.
Commission on Elections Central Luzon assistant director Elmo Duque said elections went smoothly despite minor glitches.
He said 26 vote counting machines and SD cards were found defective in several polling precincts in Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, Bataan, Aurora, Pampanga and Tarlac.
“Aside from the usual problems of difficulty in finding  names of registered voters, the conduct of voting in the region has so far gone smoothly,” Duque said.
