LAOAG CITY -- Ilocos Norte Gov. Matthew Marcos
Manotoc said he will sustain initiatives in ensuring employment, livelihood,
and earning opportunities for Ilokanos in his second term as the province’s
chief executive.
While acknowledging sectors of agriculture and tourism as economic powerhouses in the province, the importance of sustaining basic government services and pitching Ilocos Norte as a viable investment hub, Gov. Marcos Manotoc during a recent press briefing, said
measures to mitigate impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on employment and livelihood of locals.
“We are still looking at agriculture and tourism because bumabalik talaga tayo palagi doon. And then there are the basic services of health, education, and utilities. We want to make sure na ang mga basic services dito sa probinsiya ay talagang quality. And, of course, attracting investment. We already have some businesses that have committed. But pinaka-importante, of course, trabaho, hanapbuhay, at kita.”
As of January 2022, Manotoc's administration had distributed cash aid totaling P370 million to provincial folks most vulnerable during the pandemic in the form of cash-for-work, emergency livelihood assistance and pay-now-work-later programs.
P40 million in cash was granted to entrepreneurs through micro-financing, apart from livelihood starter kits and equipment.
When asked about the "lessons" he has learned in his first term ending this month, Manotoc said:
"Pinaka-importante is medyo alam ko na ‘yong sistema. I used to tell myself that I had to work hard and stay late at work, but now, as they say, it's not just about working hard, but also about working smart. At least ngayon medyo alam ko na kung anong kailangan gawin, anong diskarte."
He said he looked forward to working with the national government in his new term.
“Were hoping for PBBM (President Bongbong Marcos) na tuloy-tuloy po ang tulong dito sa Ilocos Norte. We are excited. Ako medyo takot din kasi it’s going to be a lot of work, but more opportunity, so kailangang ma-seize lang. We look forward to working with my uncle on many many things,” he said.
Manotoc won his reelection bid with an overwhelming margin in the recent election.
