P58.6
million marijuana burned
in Kalinga town
TINGLAYAN, Kalinga
-- Combined police and anti-illegal drugs operatives raided 10 marijuana
plantations and burned P58.6 million worth of fully grown marijuana plants from
January 24 to 28 here in Barangay Loccong.
The series
of operations resulted in the uprooting of 293,000 marijuana plants from 10
sites covering a total land area of 32,100 square meters.
The authorities
estimated the value of the eradicated marijuana plants based on the assessment
set by the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB).
No
cultivator, however, was arrested during the operation.
Col. Charles
Domallig, provincial director of the Kalinga Police Office, commended the
operatives for their constant cooperation which led to the successful
eradication of the marijuana plants.
"We
will continue with the marijuana eradication operation in our collaborative
efforts with the aim of totally ending the cultivation to prevent the possible
movement of marijuana from the province to the urban areas," Domallig
said.
Most of the
destroyed marijuana plants were burned on site, while portions of the same were
brought to the Kalinga Provincial Police Office for evidentiary purposes.
Tinglayan
has been known to be one of the major producers of marijuana because of its
mountainous terrain and weather conditions that are conducive for the
production of the illegal hemp.
