BAGUIO CITY -- The 73rd edition of the Januarius Fil-Am Invitational Amateur Golf Tournament will even be bigger than last year’s edition, cementing its reputation as the largest amateur golf tournament in Asia-Pacific.
CJH Golf Club general manager Judson Eustaquio said there will be 252 registered teams to join this year’s seniors and regular divisions of the tournament which will again be held at the Baguio Country Club (BCC) and Camp John Hay (CJH) golf courses from November 22 to December 20, 2023.This comprises more than 1,400 golfers coming up to Baguio City which is already experiencing the onset of the easterly winds, or the amihan.
The waiting list is so long -- 138 teams were put on hold -- that it would need another week to accommodate them.
Last year, 240 teams were registered for the tournament, with 107 teams on the waiting list.
The Januarius Fil-Am Invitational Amateur Golf Tournament is nearing the all-time high of 256 teams set in 2019 before the COVID pandemic. The tournament had been put on hold in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
The world’s biggest amateur golf tournament is the PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur in the U.S., which is played on 50 golf courses in North and South Carolina with more than 3,200 amateur golfers attending.
The Fil-Am has the par 96 John Hay and par 61 Baguio Country Club golf courses.
Eustaquio said that for the first time in six years, the tournament will have a title sponsor in Januarius Holdings, an asset management company.
He said that some of the holes in both courses are being improved and rehabilitated in time for the tournament.
BCC general manager Anthony de Leon added that the exclusive club acquired some 40 golf carts to provide the players with a wonderful experience playing on the BCC course during the duration of the tournament.
Further, de Leon disclosed that the club’s newly renovated rooms will also be opened in time for the influx of visitors during the Fil-Am invitational golf tournament aside from showcasing the first smart room.
He said that the BCC rooms underwent renovation over the past six months and will be opened in time for visitors during the conduct of the amateur golf tournament next month.
