BAGUIO CITY-- The Dept. of Interior and Local Government Cordillera urged local government units in the region to heighten their disaster preparedness measures in anticipation of the potential impact of tropical storm "Falcon" (Khanun) following devastation caused by Typhoon Egay last week.
“We are calling on our LCEs to remain in your post before, during, and after a typhoon hits their area of responsibility. Your active presence and leadership are vital in implementing the "Operation L!STO Protocols" effectively,” said Araceli San Jose, DILG Cordillera regional director Tuesday.
She cited importance of LCEs collaborating with their respective local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils. “It is crucial to remind our LCEs, particularly in areas that recently encountered prolonged rain events, landslides, and flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone “Egay” and the intensified Southwest Monsoon, to take necessary precautions and preparedness for TS Falcon (Khanun) to avert more damages and casualties.”
She urged LGUs to work closely with disaster response teams and stakeholders to facilitate timely and effective response efforts.
Coordinating resources and efforts can make a significant difference in mitigating the impact of the typhoon.
“Typhoons can bring devastating impacts to our region, posing threats to lives and properties. We must act swiftly and decisively to ensure the safety and well-being of our constituents,” she said.
Meanwhile, San Jose has instructed local government units to implement "Operation L!STO Protocols" and ensure its full execution within their respective areas of jurisdiction.
The protocols encompass various measures such as the timely dissemination of early warnings, the development of evacuation plans, the strategic prepositioning of emergency supplies, and the effective coordination with the appropriate organizations.
“The safety and well-being of our people should be our top priority. Ensure that evacuation plans are in place and communicated to the public. Should there be a need, conduct preemptive or forced evacuations to ensure safety of our constituents and rescuers as well,” she said.
Also, she said that “through the embodiment of the principles behind Operation L!STO, local government units have potential to cultivate culture of preparedness and resilience within their respective communities. Their unwavering dedication and exemplary leadership will serve as a catalyst, motivating others to actively engage in the protection and well-being of their families and communities.
“We must confront this typhoon season with resolve, solidarity, and a collective commitment to the well-being of our constituents. Collectively, we have the capacity to endure challenging circumstances and ultimately emerge with increased resilience and fortitude,” San Jose said.
Accordingly, TS Falcon (Khanun) entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) July 29.
The storm is currently exhibiting a north northwestward trajectory, advancing at a velocity of 20 km/h. It is accompanied by strong gale-force winds that extend outward up to a distance of 650 km from its center.
Based on the forecast, the tropical storm is expected to undergo a continuous intensification.
By Sunday 9today)it is projected to develop into a typhoon within the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).
It is anticipated to reach its maximum intensity by Tuesday, either over the East China Sea or outside the PAR.
