LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- The
provincial Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious
Diseases opened Benguet to local tourists recently.
Gov. Melchor Diclas said this was part of the efforts of the local government to gradually and safely revive the tourism industry in the province and the economic activities of the people. Diclas said tourist spots would only be opened for local tourists but strict adherence to health rules must be followed to avoid another surge of Covid-19 cases in the province.
The governor said the province's health care system was nearly overwhelmed the past three months due to rise in Covid-19 cases and people must learn from this experience.
He added fully-vaccinated local tourists should carry their vaccination cards with them at all times while unvaccinated travelers are required to present negative results from a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test.
Diclas said tourist destinations with open spaces are allowed to accommodate 50 percent of the venue capacity while enclosed spaces are limited to 30 percent of venue capacity.
According to the governor, tourism was one of the province's economic drivers because of natural attractions.
Benguet was forced to stop accepting visitors a few months ago due to the surge in Covid-19 cases, particularly the Delta variant.
Tourist attractions in the province include Mount Pulag National Park, the second highest mountain peak in the country and the highest mountain peak in Luzon, the famous Kabayan mummies, vegetable terraces and farms, Asin hot springs and trekking destinations.
